Camping Story

I'll never forget the one time I went camping and canoeing down the Au Sable River with my church group. Most of the people that went with us weren't experienced in a canoeing. So I tried to help people out when they were having trouble since my dad has been taking us since we were little. Everything in the beginning was going smoothly, which was a good thing because the water was freezing today.
Halfway down the river my partner kept moving around in the canoe, causing it to rock. Before I knew it we were both in the freezing cold water! It wouldn't have been so bad if it had just happened the one time, but it ended up happening continuously from then on. After awhile I was freezing and covered with bruises due to falling out of a metal canoe and having to get back in numerous times. Towards the end of the river, I was so fed up that we just ended up staying in the cold water and dragging our canoe to the finish.
It took quite some time after that traumatic canoeing experience to get me back on the water. However, now when I do, I never claim to be an expert like I did before.

Canoe Camp Trip

When I was 19 I went on a weekend camping and canoeing trip down the Au Sable. It was an all girl's trip and the only help we got outside of our group was from Gott's Canoe Livery run by my Uncle Jerry. He set us up with some canoes and a map, which was all I thought we'ld need. I didn't think much of the fact that it was an all girls trip because I had always done trips like this, but apparently other girls don't necessarily go for the whole outdoors thing.

We had lots of adventures that weekend. We had cans of spaghettios but no one remembered the can opener. I don't know about you but cold spaghettios with metal shards really does hit the spot after a day of canoeing in the pooring rain. I figured out how to open it with a knife. We thought we could just get wood from "the wilderness" not considering that it might rain cats and dogs our first day (it's funny that I had a firelog in my car).

There was one point when a we missed our camp spot and had to walk the canoes upstream for about 1/2 a mile. One of the girls jumped in the canoe and refused to help. It's amazing how much water you can get into a canoe when you really want to. Little note: that same girl also opened my pack to get something out and left it open during the worst rain of the whole trip...trying to dry clothes on the water is really really fun!
